Linux is a Unix like computer operating system. Most of us knows that Linux is a leading server OS. You heard iOS – Apple’s mobile operating system, BlackBerry OS, Windows Mobile OS and Latest one Windows Phone 7. World’s biggest companies are using Linux based Mobile OSs. You may heard Linux Mobile OSs, Do you? and What are they?
As you know Linux is open source and free under open source license. There are popular Linux based Mobile OSs in the market, You may know most of their names but not about their OS kernel base. Lets see the Popular Linux based Mobile OSs.
Android: Yes, you heard right. Android is based upon a modified version of the Linux kernel. And Android is initially developed by Android Inc, later Google acquired and developed Android further. Android is open sourced and licensed under apache license and open source license. Android is one of the most successful Linux based products ever. HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Dell and many other mobile manufacturers are using Android. Initially developed for Smartphone’s and now using for Tablets too. Mobiles runs on Android are HTC Legend, HTC HD2, Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy etc.
WebOS: This mobile operating system is running on the Linux kernel. WebOS is developed by Palm. WebOS is using on Palm mobiles. HP purchased Palm. Now they are planning to use WebOS on tablets and printers too. Mobiles runs on WebOS are Palm Pre, Palm Pixi.
Bada: Bada is mobile operating system based on Linux and developed by Samsung Electronics. Samsung planned to rapidly replace its proprietary feature phone platform using Bada.The first Bada used phone is Samsung Wave.
Maemo: It is a Debian Linux based mobile OS developed by Nokia. It is developed for smartphones and internet tablets. Nokia N900 is the first smartphone runs on Maemo.
LiMo: This Linux based mobile operating system platform is developed by LiMo Foundation. It was founded by Motorala, NTT Docomo, NEC, Samsung, Vodafone and others. Mobiles running on LiMo platform are Moto ROKR, Moto Razr, Samsung SCH-M510, NTT Docomo P-10a etc.
And many other Linux based platforms are there developed for smartphones. Thanks to Linus Torvalds, the initiator of development of Linux kernel, the free and open sourced Linux is creating wonders.
